If I enrol in kConFab – what is required of me?

Adults, male and female, cancer affected and unaffected over the age of 18 are eligible to be in the kConFab family, should they fit the eligibility criteria.

Individuals who join the study will be asked to:

  • answer questions concerning their medical history, health and lifestyle
  • have a small sample of blood (20ml) taken (at no cost to you)
  • If you should undergo any form of surgery, whether normal or cancerous, if its easily accessible and non- health threatening, provide tissue specimens of any type (optional)
  • Keep us up to date of any new cases of cancer in your family
  • From time to time inform us of health updates (through a survey). You can at that time either participate or decline.

In return we will:

  • inform you of any test result that may have implications for you or your family and support you for further clinical genetics testing to verify our research finding
  • keep you informed (through our website and newsletters) of any clinically significant findings from our research studies
  • Provide you with the option to withdraw from this study at any time without prejudice, and if requested, destroy blood sample and any previous questionnaire completed.

Please note: Individuals can still contribute to the study even if they do not wish to give blood, or do not wish to know the results of any genetic testing.
